Alan enjoys a VIP trip to London

Idlewells’ star fundraiser, Alan Hupton, was treated to a day he’ll never forget by the Idlewells team and the latest benefactor of his amazing work – Great Ormond Street Hospital.

In November (2018) Idlewells Centre Manager, Chloe O’Donnell and Security Manager, Michael Storer travelled with Alan to London and received a VIP tour of the facilities.

Alan enjoyed a VIP tour of Great Ormond Street and a demonstration of the equipment purchased, thanks to him and other supporters, then were met by Morgan Garfield and Lorraine Tyson, from Idlewells’ landlord, Ellandi, and treated to a slap up meal, followed by Alan’s favourite dessert, coffee cake, at the renowned London restaurant, The Brassierie.

“Alan thoroughly enjoyed his day,” said Chloe. “from the train journey onward, he just couldn’t stop smiling, it was a joy to see!”

Alan has been fundraising since 1972, following the decline of his health and mobility in the 1960’s, and it is estimated that he’s raised a total of £225,000 for a number of charities since then.  These charities have included Guide Dogs for the Blind, Breast Cancer, British Heart Foundation, The Royal British Legion poppy appeals and Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire Air Ambulance.

As an act of thanks for Idlewells’ support over the years, in 2018 Alan offered to regularly raise funds for the Centre’s ‘One Great Day’ charity – a national initiative for shopping centres to raise money for Great Ormond Street Hospital and children’s charities.

Alan said, “I’m happy to be helping Idlewells in its support for this worthwhile charity and helping the children. I don’t like to think that there are children still out there going through the same as I have.”

Alan is continuing to raising record funds at his 5 day-a-week position in Idlewells, and has become a popular member of the community due to his hard work and commitment.

“We all take our hats off to Alan, he dedicates his life to his fundraising for others – he is a real local hero.” Concluded Chloe.
